As a college student, I’ve noticed many of my peers were unaware of the events happening across different Humber campuses since Humber has always relied on Eventbrite for their events but sought something more tailored to their unique needs.
How might we develop an event management system that simplifies event registration & management for both internal and external stakeholders of Humber college?

Creative event organization with streamlined information flow
Manage your events
Track, host, and manage all your events at a glance.
Creative display of events and categories based on the interest.
Can’t miss the details for important events marked as “favorites”
Streamlined dashboard
Simplified categorization of total events, in progress, pending, archived etc.
Various pages like payment, networking, social media, payment etc. can be managed through the dashboard.
Flexibility to continue working on an unpublished event from the dashboard.

“A way to manage both internal & external stakeholders”
Starting with the research, I wanted to gain information from various articles and journals on filtering options, event organization, attendee management, admin dashboard management, event details page, etc.
“Balancing the diverse needs of various stakeholders can be one of the most challenging aspects of stakeholder management. The key is to prioritize based on the project objectives, the stakeholders’ influence, and urgency of their needs.”

Each of the competitors had something unique to offer but….
Upon analyzing all the three competitors, I found that almost none of them had refined filter options to streamline the process of finding events of interest. This lack of advanced filtering features significantly increases the time users need to invest is finding relevant events.

Both internal and external stakeholders strongly highlighted the need for a straight forward user flow and clear information architecture to eliminate confusion.
I conducted interviews with four internal stakeholders who were unaware of current events and struggled to easily locate several Humber-related activities. I’ve asked them the questions below to understand why they failed at some of the goals:
Research Questions:
How do you typically find out about about upcoming events?
Can you describe any challenges you’ve faced while navigating through the current event management system?
What features do you find most useful when browsing for events online?

Brainstorming design ideas + design inspirations
We spent a few weeks researching different ways to showcase the events creatively, by taking inspiration from different websites like Netflix, livenation.com etc.

2 major additions & improvements in my design
Based on the feedback and requirements received from 4 college students studying in Humber college, I continually iterated my design over the span of 8 weeks - with 2 major additions and improvements.
Re-organization of event categories
Event categories changed from the list format to a slider to avoid the design to look complex.
Increased height of the interactive banner with an option to register for the event from there.
Highlighted text to make it more visible for the users.
Students prefer seeing the “happening now” events at top to avoid missing out
Clear display of events “Happening now” at the top.
Bigger theme thumbnails at the top for increased clarity to browse events.

What I’ve learned and do differently next time:
Humber was my first project where I got the opportunity to collaborate with Web Developers and Content Strategists to design all screens from scratch and prototype for the new Humber Events website! 🎊 On that note, here are a few of my learnings:
Focus on 3Cs - Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity: I got an exciting opportunity to communicate, collaborate, and be as creative as possible for the Humber Events website. Following these 3Cs helped me understand the perspective, limitations, and ideation process of other team members. Throughout the project, all team members exchanged ideas to address the client's highlighted issues most effectively. In the end, my goal was to absorb as much knowledge as I could from my team members, in order to investigate new, innovative methods of the design process and inspire greater creativity in our design solutions.
Insights from stakeholders: I learned the importance of deeply engaging with stakeholders to extract valuable insights. This process highlighted the need for more iterative feedback loops, ensuring stakeholder expectations align with user needs and transparent. Moving forward, I would prioritize regular check-ins and utilize interactive prototypes early on to visualize concepts and gather more precise feedback, leading to more refined and user-centric designs.
Power of organized content: Throughout the Humber Events website design project, I realized the power of organized content in enhancing user experience. Structured information not only improves navigation but also ensures users can quickly find relevant details. In future projects, I would focus on creating clear content hierarchies and utilizing visual design elements to guide users effectively.
